My new toy arrived last week, hidden in swathes of bubble wrap and buried at the bottom of the transport truck. A treat for myself; after a busy season of excessive toil, the tourists have disappeared and I am left to explore the sublime nature selfishly keeping it all to myself...
I already have a fleet of sea kayaks which ply the coastline of the Gulf of Fethiye and the Seven Capes, the kayaks are closed vessels with bulkheads and compartments to carry camp to deserted beaches and secluded coves. One wears a spray skirt which stretches over the cockpit stopping waves and spray filling the kayak. With experience one can paddle a challenging sea with waves breaking at two and a half metres and wind gusts blowing over 15 knots alternatively the sea can be a placid expanse mirroring the reflection of mountains on its smooth surface.
My latest purchase is a sit on top (SOT) kayak which is designed with comfort and angling in mind.
It is not a regular beach rental which has hard surfaces and acute angles that put a lot of stress on the shoulders and upper spine whilst paddling. This kayak is built for comfort; padded seat with adjustable back rest, foot rests that slide along a rail for the paddler’s leg length. For storage two dry hatches and a large storage area behind the seat with strapping to keep everything secured. Last but not least I have added a fishing rod holder so I can fish as I paddle.
The kayak is wide and well balanced, so easy to use, manoeuvrable and shorter than my regular sea kayaks. Being very user friendly, everybody can use these kayaks with the minimum amount of instruction and in summer it is perfect to swim and snorkel from.
Having more time on my hands during the winter months I intend to improve my fishing skills whilst combining some exercise to keep fit and healthy. The other big plus is being out on the sea exploring the dramatic coastline without engine noise and pollution.
